Technical expertise
- Design and construction of the instrument option MuPAD for spherical neutron polarization analysis for the measurement of complex magnetic structures and magnetic excitations. Currently two MuPAD devices are in operation at PSI, Switzerland and at FRM II, Germany.
- Design of the neutron guide optics, primary and secondary spectrometer for the new polarized three-axis spectrometer KOMPASS at the cold source of the research reactor FRM II in Munich, Germany.
- Expert in the use of neutron triple-axis spectrometers (TAS), measurements on different spectrometers at various international sources (IN3, IN14, IN20 and IN22 at ILL, TASP at PSI, PANDA at FRM II). Detailed knowledge of TAS data analysis, development of my own analysis software.
Detailed knowledge of neutron diffraction techniques (polarized and unpolarized neutrons) with both powder and single-crystal samples (D3, D15, CryoPAD at ILL, DMC, TriCs, MuPAD at PSI, MIRA, HEiDi, MuPAD at FRM II). This includes the knowledge of appropriate analysis tools (Fullprof, CrysFML, CCSL) and development of my own analysis tools for polarized neutron data.
- Expertise in the use of further advanced polarized neutron methods: neutron resonance spin echo and Larmor diffraction for high energy or high Q-resolution without the loss of intensity, respectively (ZETA at ILL, TRISP and RESEDA at FRM II), spherical neutron polarimetry (MuPAD at PSI and FRM II, CryoPAD at ILL).
- Skilled in the use of the appropriate sample environment for neutron scattering: low temperature cryostats, horizontal and vertical high field magnets, pressure cells.
Extensive knowledge of the McStas software that enables the Monte-Carlo simulation of entire neutron instruments from the source to the detector for instrument design/optimization or preparation of experiments (“virtual experiments”).
- Synchrotron user: resonant magnetic scattering (SIM beamline at SLS, PSI, Switzerland).
- Operation and maintenance of Faraday magnetometer that operates at 3He temperatures (reaches ~0.35 K).
- Expert in the use of Quantum Design (QD) low temperature equipment: maintenance and use of 3 MPMSs, a PPMS and a PPMS Dynacool (beta site tester for QD). Development of user options for the PPMS Dynacool: DC electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power and Hall resistivity.
- Use and maintenance of a Bruker D8 Discover x-ray diffractometer for both powder and single-crystal diffraction. Knowledge of appropriate analysis software (GSAS, Fullprof).
- EDX user for the test of the chemical composition of samples (FEI company Model 600).
- Sample synthesis: solid state reaction, molten Indium flux, Czochralski technique (Techno Search TCA 4-5 tetra arc furnace, growth of U-based single crystals)
